Known as "The
First Town in the First State," Lewes (pronounced 'Lewis')
is Delaware's northernmost coastal town. Originally settled as
a whaling colony in 1631, Lewes today is a vibrant community renowned
for its historic buildings, superb fishing and fantastic shops
and restaurants. Located at the junction of the Atlantic Ocean
and Delaware Bay, Lewes is home to almost 4,000 acres of history
and natural wonders known as Cape Henlopen State Park, with guarded
beaches in the summer and nature trails and the Seaside Nature
Center open year 'round. Next door to the park is where you'll
find the Cape May - Lewes Ferry, where you can walk, bicycle or
drive aboard for the 70 minute crossing to Cape May, New Jersey.
Served by the same school district (Cape Henlopen) and medical
facility (Beebe Medical Center) as Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach,
Lewes ranks as one of the premier locations for a summer retreat,
weekend getaway or year 'round living.
